Sergeant Wilson and Jean-Claude exited the Gagnon home, each of them lost in speculation about the case. As they walked towards their car, she turned to the young man. “We still need to speak with Luke Maquire and get his statement.”

Jean-Claude nodded. “Yeah, he’s the last one to see Everitt alive and he admitted he wasn’t exactly fond of the guy. But at this point, it looks like no one was, right?”

They drove back to their makeshift office and settled in. As Wilson went to call Luke, Jean-Claude grabbed a large pad of paper and an easel, setting them up across from the desks. He started to create a timeline of events surrounding Everitt’s arrival on the island on June 28th up until his body was discovered on June 30th.

When she returned to their work space, Jean-Claude was jotting down key dates and events on the pad of paper as they waited for Luke. “He should be here pretty soon,” she told the rookie.

The young officer turned to her, his marker underscoring the time, “Tuesday, ‘June 28th. Everitt Leary arrives on the island and checks into the Mermaid Hotel. Jake Doolin checked him in at five p.m. Everitt puts his bag in his room and then goes back down to the bar, served by Jake until Aria arrives at 6 pm. Aria serves Everitt drinks until 10 pm. During that time…”

Jean-Claude indented the next line, as he continued, “Sophia and Richard Gagnon are there talking about Lot 12. Everitt expresses an interest, commenting that he hadn’t seen a ‘For Sale’ sign when he walked through the village. Aria is puzzled about his interest in the lot but as he has made a pass at her, she keeps her distance.”

Wilson nodded, “Also present were Irene and Ben Walsh who sat off by themselves. And during that time, Luke came in for one beer, sitting by the window before he left.” She tilted her head at Jean-Claude. “Nobody saw any exchange between the two men there, did they?”

He shrugged. “Nobody said anything, so no.” He made a quick smirk. “It’s a small town; if anything had gone on between them, at least one of the people we’ve interviewed would have mentioned it.”

Wilson nodded in agreement.

Jean-Claude continued. “When Everitt goes up to his room, he rings for additional towels. Donna Wong brings them up and he leaves the bathroom wearing only a towel before again making advances on the innocent young woman.”

“We don’t know how innocent she is, Constable. For all we know, maybe he persisted and she had to rebuff him physically. It might have been Donna who put that blow on his forehead.”

“Right.” He crossed out the word ‘innocent’, putting a question mark above it and begins a new heading. “Wednesday, June 29th Morning…” He looks over at the Sergeant. “No one said anything about seeing him that morning or even in the afternoon. What was Everitt doing then?”

“What did we do when we woke up here today? We went to the Island Eats for breakfast and then came to work.
